Looking for a simple guide to quickly brief you on ATV tire chains? Look no further. We will discuss the different types of tire chains available for ATV’s. How they work. How to install ATV tire chains and, where to purchase them.
ATV tire chains are for one purpose….peak performance. Tire chains are used mostly in areas that have a lot of ice and snow. Few, however know much about the performance that tire chains can give is in dirt and mud. They are overlooked for this terrain, but when used correctly our tire chains can take us almost anywhere.
For the most part there are 2 main types of ATV tire chains—the 4-link and the 2-link. Then there are 3 different patterns and shapes of chains. The 4 link chains have a cross chain for every 4 side links. These are the original tire chains and add a lot of traction to our ATV’s. The 2 links have a cross chain for every 2 side links. This increases our traction aver 2 fold compared to the 4 link. These have better control, constraint, traction and, are a smoother ride. I recommend these for our maximum performance.
The 3 different pattern/shapes are the V-bar, Super Stud, and the D-shape. Some of these can combine into the other and be mixed together. Here is an explanation. The V-bar has individual links that are ‘V’ shaped. The D-shape has a pattern that looks like a ‘D’ when they are installed on the tire. So it is very possible to have a D-shape chain with V-bar links on it. The Super Stud is in a category of its own. These are almost scary looking and the performance it adds is almost scary to. This chain actually has studs or cleats that stick out and stick into the ground when they are on the ATV. Ice, snow and dirt are seldom a problem with these chains. How ever these weaken our performance on solid rock and paved roads. They are not recommend for these surfaces.
Installing the chain is basic and simple. First, make sure the chains are laid on the ground with the tire side of the chains faced up and the ground side of the chains faced down. Then simply back on top of the chains half way and wrap around the tire. Then repeat.
Shopping for these are easy also. Make sure you have the correct tire size then you can either google ATV tire chains, or go to your local ATV store. Online you have a vast amount of websites that can and will give you more than enough purchasing knowledge. Prices range generally between $30 and $100 for new chains.
